West Bengal Reports Highest Share of Child Marriages Among Girls Below 18, Latest Data Shows

Kolkata:

West Bengal has recorded the highest share of girls married before the age of 18 among Indian states, according to recently released statistical data, drawing attention to the continuing challenge of child marriage in parts of the country despite an overall decline in recent years.

The figures indicate that West Bengal accounts for the largest proportion of underage marriages involving girls, with Jharkhand ranking second. Several eastern and central Indian states also reported rates above the national average.

The data comes amid ongoing efforts by both central and state governments to curb child marriage through awareness campaigns, educational initiatives and financial assistance programmes aimed at keeping girls in school.

Experts have long linked child marriage to factors such as poverty, limited access to education, social traditions and economic insecurity. Studies suggest that girls married before the legal age are more likely to face educational disruptions, health risks and reduced employment opportunities later in life.

While India has witnessed a gradual decline in child marriage over the past decade, regional disparities continue to persist. Policymakers and social organisations have emphasised the need for targeted interventions in districts where early marriage remains prevalent.

West Bengal has implemented several welfare schemes, including programmes focused on girls' education and empowerment, in an effort to discourage underage marriages. However, experts believe sustained awareness, community participation and improved educational access remain critical to achieving further progress.

The latest figures have renewed discussions on child protection measures, gender equality and the importance of ensuring that girls remain in education until adulthood.

As authorities continue monitoring the issue, policymakers are expected to focus on strengthening enforcement of existing laws and expanding support programmes aimed at reducing the incidence of child marriage across the country.
