Delhi Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises as Probe Begins Into Mehrauli Tragedy

New Delhi:

Authorities have launched a detailed investigation after a multi-storey building collapsed in Delhi's Mehrauli area, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries. Rescue teams worked through the night to search for survivors trapped beneath the debris as emergency response operations continued at the site.

According to officials, the building collapsed near the Saket Metro station area, triggering panic among residents and prompting an immediate response from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, police personnel and local authorities. Several people were rescued from the rubble and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Officials confirmed that the death toll increased as rescue teams recovered additional victims from beneath the debris. Authorities stated that efforts were focused on ensuring no one remained trapped inside the collapsed structure.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has suspended two engineers pending an inquiry into the incident. Investigators are examining whether structural weaknesses, construction violations or lapses in safety compliance may have contributed to the collapse. An FIR has also been registered as part of the ongoing probe.

Police teams are also searching for individuals connected to the ownership and maintenance of the building. Officials said records related to construction approvals and structural safety are being reviewed.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over building safety and unauthorised construction in densely populated parts of the national capital. Civic authorities have faced increasing scrutiny over structural inspections and enforcement measures following multiple building-related incidents reported in recent years.

Authorities have assured that accountability will be fixed once the investigation is completed. Further details are expected as forensic assessments and structural reviews continue.
