Nitin Gadkari Announces Regulatory Approval for 100% Ethanol Fuel in India

 New Delhi:

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced that the government has finalised regulations authorising the use of 100% ethanol as a vehicle fuel in India, a move that could accelerate the country's transition towards alternative and cleaner energy sources.

Speaking about the development, Gadkari said the necessary regulatory framework has been approved, enabling wider adoption of ethanol-powered mobility solutions. The announcement is being viewed as a significant milestone in India's efforts to reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels and strengthen domestic energy security.

Ethanol, primarily produced from agricultural feedstocks such as sugarcane and maize, has already been integrated into India's fuel ecosystem through ethanol-blended petrol programmes. The latest development opens the door for vehicles designed to run entirely on ethanol, subject to manufacturer specifications and market adoption.

According to Gadkari, several automobile manufacturers are either launching or preparing vehicles compatible with higher ethanol concentrations. Industry observers believe the move could support India's broader objectives of reducing crude oil imports while creating additional demand for agricultural produce used in biofuel production.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts in the hydrogen mobility sector. He referred to a pilot project in Nagpur involving hydrogen-powered buses and supporting infrastructure, describing it as part of a wider strategy to promote cleaner transportation technologies.

India has been actively pursuing multiple alternative fuel pathways, including ethanol, compressed biogas, electric mobility and green hydrogen. Policymakers view these technologies as important components of the country's long-term sustainability and emissions-reduction goals.

Experts note that large-scale adoption of 100% ethanol-powered vehicles will require adequate fuel distribution infrastructure, vehicle compatibility and industry participation. However, the regulatory approval is expected to provide momentum for future investments and technological development in the sector.

The announcement comes as India continues to expand its renewable energy and clean transportation initiatives while seeking to reduce reliance on imported petroleum products.
